bernie connor presents the sound of music. episode five: it's the new thing

another week, another dead line. follwing me incident with the incredible trainspotting man last week i re-assembled meself and started again. wallowng in the glory of everton's semi-final victory i was sidetracked by a comment left on me facebook page which, levelled the accusation that i don't play enough 'new' music on this broadcast. to a degree i can understand, in a perfect world i'd like to be able to find enough 'new' music to fill the whole show, but i'm sure it would drive me crackers and be detrimental to the show itself.

the buzz word here-if indeed there is one- is entertainment, i wanna do a show that partially reflects the state of me head in any given week. i play the music i like and hopefully you will too, it's not easy finding enough music to fill a show without being repetitive or boring. it's not difficult either, but homing in on your favourites makes it all worthwhile.

WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?

i love 'new' music but it's getting harder and harder to keep on top of it, if i fill a quarter of the output with stuff that is new to me then i feel it's going in the right direction. sadly, i find an awful lot of 'new' guitar music i hear frightfully contrived, it is by definition a restrictive format/genre so there's only so far you can go with it before you begin to come back on yourself. a lot of it sounds like it's inhabiting the territory once occupied by the smiths, AND I FUCKIN' DESPISE THE SMITHS. so that's got that out of the way. if it was a colour, it would be beige. electronic music however seems to twist and change on a weekly basis and this fascinates me still. there's a much larger field to use and more to offer, its scope seems to beyond the realm of mossissey and the mc5. that's not to saythat we're changing tack, if i like it, it's in.

there's no criteria for my playing anything on the show, if i like it, it's in the box marked 'possible'. judging by the reactions from you lot out there i feel that you do too, which helps a lot. there aren't many dissenters, just a few really, but i seem to dwell on the negative reactions more than the positive. this is great of course, it give s me something else to think or whinge about, which can only be a good thing. so keep the comments coming thick and fast, they inadvertently shape the show you listen to. but if you don't like it, just switch off. you have the right.

this week: we overlonged it by seconds.

once more i was ruminating on the thought that music and music folk takes itself a little too seriously. last week i briefly mentioned in passing that u2 and the kings of leon are corporate fed rock bands and little more else. despite everything that bonio may think of himself as senior world statesman, he is the lead singer in a below average, multi-billion selling, corporate rock band. that's all.

it's the fans i feel sorry for..............

to the overweight and over- enthusiastic gentleman who accosted me in tesco and remonstrated with me on these points...............

1. phil spector produced one album between dion's 1975 album born to be with you and the ramones ' end of the century in 1979. it was, of course death of a ladies man by leonard cohen.

2. the lead singer of the pink floyd was 'syd barrett' not 'syd' as i referred to him.

3. frank zappa made joe's garage after mid-70's. and that's not shit, so my theory falls to the ground. apparently.

4. it's a cheap shot having a pop at kings of leon. it's like skitting the afflicted. apparently.

i say this: 'it's not so much the winning, it's more the taking part'.

i can't answer all your queries personally, but a selection will appear from time to time with a positive, encouraging response from bernie . apparently.

what i will say is this (part two): 'this level of trainspotting IS unhealthy. if it stands between me and me bananas something will have to give. and it won't be me bananas.

in the absence of a stockpile of useless information in your own life, and, if you can be bothered to find me, you could always try making mine a misery through the medium of awkward gesticulation. it's worth a try, you never know.....

imagine if all music was released onto a level playing field and the only thing that made it any good was whether you liked it or not. each individual piece would be judged on its merits, maybe you would mull over it and draw your own conclusions. you would become the important part of the equation, wrestling your own personal taste from the tyranny of critics, journalists, disc jockeys, people like me me in fact. you would become the kingmaker in your own personal world, the arbiter of what was right and what was wrong in your own life. music fans have been hanging on the word of journalists for decades, waiting for the green light of approval in order to shape their music collections in somebody elses image. how many times have we bought a record/seen a film/subscribed to a podcast because somebody else said so only for it to be crap and a complete waste of money/time/effort?

what makes these people right? they are human like you after all and their opinion no less valid, but you know every bit as much, there's no great secret. myself, i cannot trust anyone who tries to sell me u2 or the kings of leon for a living, it just doesn't seem right somehow, what are their motives for shouting from the rooftops about something that is bogus and suspect from the very outset? there is a trend among middle-aged male music critics -people who should really know better- to portray girls aloud as the saviours of modern pop music from a cruel and uncaringl world, this is rubbish on two counts: 1) girls aloud really are just a finely tuned cynical machine for extracting pocket money from pre-pubesecent girls and, 2) pop music doesn't need saving, it's as great or as rubbish as it's always been. it just depends how you define pop music and what you are listening to. if cradle of filth is your bag then you're not gonna get much change out of this week's top 40, similarly if you've just begun a long and torrid affair with danish popsters alphabeat you're gonna find the album reviews pages in metal hammer (if it still exists) a shade disquieting.

horses for courses. etc

i have had mysterious figures shouting at me about what's right and wrong with my taste for as long as i can remember and i think it's about time they stopped. i'll be the judge of that, thank you. i went to see animal collective last week and i couldn't understand why three quarters of the audience were there, a classic example of commiting yourself to something on someone elses say so. they looked like they were waitong for something to happen. not the band, but some other thing that sam and i just weren't privy to. vote with your feet, just say no etc.

it's your life, your informed decisions, important shit you may have to carry around with you for decades. this is no joke, this is deadly serious. one day you will look back on this moment and declare: THE SOUND OF MUSIC changed my life. thank you.

WE WILL NOT SHY AWAY FROM POP MUSIC

..........glazepta was powerless to resist, as he stood before her, the brave cavalry officer strong, upright, his breeches bulging in the tropical moonlight.

'my goodness', thought glazepta, for she truly was a monumental thinker, and that.

as she gravitated towards him she could feel herself being swept away in a tsunami of unbridled ecstasy, his muscular arms enfolded her like rhodedendron roots, pulling her closer and closer. she knew, this time it would be it, and never again would her life be the same. as she finally succumbed to his fiery power she felt a protrudence rise up against her perfectly knotted naval. as she lowered her hand to identify this curious feeling, she felt something unusual. it was............THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

thanks to everyone for all their support, it was great to get such a great response after the first episode. keep up the sterling work, it's early days and as our big long journey together takes shape i'm sure it will get better and betterer. keep sending the link to all and sundry, talk about it, tell your friends how ace/rubbish/indifferent it's made you feel now you are a bona-fide citizen of bernieworld. keep the reactions coming, without you it's pointless. love, children. x
